Smartbike - For 10 years, this was CREACOM's flagship. This was the first working installation that provided the opportunity to rent out bikes through an automated ICT-system. The first installation was realised in June of 1998 in the French city of Rennes. After that, more installations followed in Singapore, Drammen, Bergen... The development for this project occured in association with the Clear Channel Media Group, and several other small Flemish enginering companies.
The further development of these products by Clear Channel and JC Decaux are based upon ideas and technical solutions that were co-developped by CREACOM. Also the name 'Smartbike', now being used by Clear Channel, was an original initiative of CREACOM. The unique expertise gathered by developping this project is still something CREACOM is extremely proud of. CREACOM is always open and actively looking for new willing partners and governments to redevelop the project on a commercial basis.
CREACOM responsibility in the Smartbike project was focused on coordinating the project, the installation, the follow-up, strategic back-up, feedback and reporting. CREACOM was involved from the very first stage (choosing the bikes and the locations of the bikestations) until the very last stage (installing the servers so the sytem could be remotely operated).
